Eventuri BMW N20 Carbon Intake (125I, 220I, 320I & 328I) – EVE-N20-CF-INT
Performance Increase : 7-12hp, 10-19ft-lb
The N20 Eventuri intake system is another example of our “Complete System” principal. It is a fully sealed system which ensures that the turbo does not draw hot air from the engine bay. To further improve on the intake temperatures, we added a front scoop which forces air into the stock duct and feeds the intake system when the car is in motion. This combination of a sealed system with an air scoop results in lower intake temperatures than the stock airbox. To ensure the smoothest flow possible we use our Patented filter housing coupled with an intake tube which replaces the stock tube. The stock tube has a sound dampening chamber which causes turbulence – our carbon tube replaces this and allows for unrestricted flow to the turbo.
The Eventuri BMW N20 intake system consists of a number of components engineered to perform a specific purpose and fabricated to the highest of standards. Here are the details for each component and the design ethos behind them:
Each intake system consists of:
- Carbon Fibre Venturi Filter Housing
- Bespoke High Flow Non-Woven Mesh Dry Cone Filter
- Carbon Fibre inlet Duct
- Carbon Fibre Inlet Tube
- Carbon Fibre Front Scoop
- Laser Cut Stainless Steel Brackets
- High Quality Silicon Coupler
Carbon Intake Housing Assembly
The filter housing comprises of a high flow filter, aluminium cowl, laser cut brackets and the carbon pod itself. The carbon pod shrouds the reverse mounted filter and smoothly shapes the airflow down to the intake tube. This smooth reduction in cross sectional area invokes the Venturi effect where the airflow accelerates whilst maintaining laminar conditions. It can be thought of as a large velocity stack – below is a diagram to show the comparison between our patented design and a regular intake system. Further details can be read in the Technology page.
Carbon Fibre Intake Tube
Our intake tube is crafted from 100% prepreg carbon fibre. The tubes smoothly carry the airflow to the turbo by ensuring there are no sharp or sudden bends. The smooth bend geometry ensures laminar flow is maintained from the filter to the exit. We have also incorporated the MAF sensor mount to the tube with a CNC machined MAF boss. By keeping the diameter the same as the stock MAF tube, the engine runs without any MAF related error lights.
Carbon Fibre Intake Duct
The duct channels ambient air from the OEM air duct to the filter. It fits inside the OEM ducting system and smoothly transitions to the circular filter housing shape. In order to ensure a good seal against engine bay heat – it also has a flexible rubber edging around the opening which presses against the OEM ducting to create the desired seal. The duct was designed to have the maximum internal volume possible within the given geometry of the engine bay. This ensures that the filter housing is able to draw with minimum restriction.
Carbon Fibre Intake Scoop
The scoop was designed for maximum efficiency in directing the incoming air to the stock duct openings. Many aftermarket scoops have a large flat area almost perpendicular to the oncoming air – not great for channeling it into the ducts as the airflow just “hits” this flat portion and creates turbulence.
The Eventuri Scoops have been designed to sit directly behind the front grills to capture as much air as possible and with a continuous curve to the duct opening to ensure this airflow is efficiently channeled. The following video explains the design features behind our M2 scoop which directly apply to the N20 scoop – it is just on the other side of the bumper. Having an effective cold air feed to the filter is an essential part of our design. Simply having some heat shields alone would result in elevated inlet air temperatures as the engine bay soaks with heat – especially on this engine since the manifold is directly next to the intake.
Performance
Below is a dyno graph showing the comparison between the Eventuri and the stock airbox on an F series 320i with a stage 1 remap. As you can see, power and torque are increased through a large portion of the rpm range. This translates on the road to increased part throttle and full throttle response with the car pulling much more eagerly to the redline. The testing was done on the same day back-to-back and temperatures were monitored to ensure consistency. The bonnet was closed for all runs.
The gains are from a combination of reasons:
1) The sealed system coupled with a front air scoop keeps IATs low.
2) The Venturi housing provides a smooth transition from the filter to the intake tube which helps the turbo to run more efficiently.
3) The entire system is constructed from pure pre-preg carbon fibre which is great at insulating from heat.
